downtown kaohsiung

I found (on flickr) this beautiful picture of the downtown area of the city I live near and thought I would share.

Welcome to Kaohsiung City. Taiwan's second largest, but most crowded, metropolitan area. Like I've mentioned before, it has over 9,700 people per square km! (For you mile lovers--that is over 6,027 people per square mile!!)

  1. Wow, that is a lot of people in one city. Our son was toying with the idea to move to Taiwan, but than he read about the bad air in Taipai (did I spell that right?) Is that bad where you live?

  2. Hey Iris!
We do get smog here too. I think Kaohsiung and Taipei are probably the two worst places in Taiwan for the bad air.
It is partly due to the factories, but also because you have so many cars and motor-scooters in just a limited area.
I think if he were to try Tainan, Taichung or Hsinchu there would be better air, but still they are big cities with plenty to keep a foreinger occupied and in good company.
On the other hand, if he doesn't mind going it alone, he could try Hualian, Kenting, or Taitong. They have much less people and are more like "tourist" spots--so they have clean air. But, he would also be one of a much smaller group of foreigners.
Illan, just south of Taipei, is also a choice to consider. It rains alot, but it is pretty and out of the metropolitian area--so it would have the cleaner air--but is close enough that going to Taipei would be easy and fun, allowing him to enjoy some of the convienences of the capital--namely food, shooping, and entertainment. :)
